  • Cannabis and cancer patients: prospects and reality.

    Cannabis-based drugs have been explored for a range of medical conditions over the past decades. Multiple sclerosis spasticity and seizures are among the cases where we have promising results. But what about cancer patients? To highlight the National CBD Day on this August 8th, let’s discuss the current evidence supporting the use of cannabis drugs for cancer patients, particularly for symptoms such as chemotherapy-induced nausea and chronic pain . What is Cannabis? Cannabis sativa L . is a plant containing over 80 different naturally occurring compounds known as cannabinoids. Two well-known cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is psychoactive, which means it changes how your brain works. It’s the ingredient in marijuana that makes you feel high. CBD isn’t psychoactive, so it doesn’t make you high. When discussing the pharmaceutical use of cannabis, it is also important to differentiate between cannabis-related compounds and cannabis-derived compounds. Cannabis-related compounds are naturally occurring in the plant and are extracted directly to manufacture drug products. In contrast, cannabis-derived compounds are synthetic and created in a laboratory from the natural ones. Using cannabis to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting For example, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) have been effectively managed using cannabis-derived compounds like dronabinol (Marinol®/Syndros®) and nabilone (Cesamet®). Both of these medications are derived from the THC and have received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients who have not adequately responded to conventional antiemetic treatments. Even though these medications come with some side effects, they have been used as a therapy option for the past decades.     Using cannabis to treat cancer pain However, the discussion becomes more complex when it comes to chronic pain management. There is no cannabis-derived approved medicine for this indication, so it is usually used in the form of inhalation, oils, sprays or tablets containing active cannabis ingredients. Studies and systematic reviews over the past decades have produced inconsistent results. Up to this moment, there are no double-blinded and placebo-controlled clinical trials with large sample sizes that either reject or prove the efficacy of cannabis in the treatment of chronic cancer pain management.  Additionally, in most of the studies that we have to this moment, cannabis is used as an adjunct therapy. This means that patients are also taking conventional painkillers such as opioids, and the goal of the trials is to evaluate if cannabis can reduce the consumption of opioids. In general, these trials suggest that cannabis may have some potential benefits, but the side effects and long-term effects need to be considered. So, for cancer-related chronic pain, despite having some promising results, much needs to be done until we get to a recommendation or clinical guideline. Cannabis-based drugs have a potential but more research needs to be done The exploration of cannabis-based drugs for medical conditions has yielded promising results, particularly in managing symptoms such as chemotherapy-induced nausea and chronic pain. While cannabis-derived compounds like dronabinol and nabilone have proven effective for CINV, the use of cannabis for chronic pain remains contentious and requires further research and clinical guidelines. Additionally, recent studies on CBD highlight its potential not only for symptom management but also as a possible treatment for certain cancers. Although still in early stages, the ongoing research and recognition by institutions like the American Cancer Society suggest a future where cannabis-based therapies could play a role in cancer treatment. Continued research and careful consideration of the benefits and risks will be essential in advancing the medical application of these drugs.   • Debunking the Myth: Soy Consumption and Cancer Risk

    The Myth: cancer survivors shouldn’t eat soy One persistent myth in the realm of nutrition and health is the belief that consuming soy can increase the risk of breast cancer and even prostate cancer . This misconception has caused many people to avoid soy products out of fear that they could contribute to cancer development. The Facts: Breast Cancer & Soy The concern over soy and breast cancer largely stems from earlier studies that sought to establish a correlation between soy consumption and breast cancer risk. These studies were often inconclusive and led to confusion and concern. However, as scientific research has advanced, our understanding of soy and its effects on breast cancer has become clearer. Soy contains compounds known as isoflavones, specifically genistein and daidzein. These isoflavones have a structure similar to that of 17-β estradiol, a form of estrogen found in human females. Because of this similarity, isoflavones can bind to and activate estrogen receptors in the body. However, rather than increasing estrogen production, these isoflavones actually result in a decrease in the body's estrogen production. Recent studies have shown that not only soy consumption doesn’t increase breast cancer risk, but it may actually be beneficial for breast cancer prevention. Women who consume high amounts of soy and isoflavones have been found to have a lower risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer compared to women who do not include soy in their diets. This suggests that soy may play a protective role against the development of breast cancer. A report from the World Cancer Research Fund International/American Institute for Cancer Research concluded that despite the limited number of published studies on the matter, there is sufficient evidence to suggest a positive outcome between soy consumption and breast cancer survival rates. It also reported that higher consumption of soy and, therefore, isoflavones post-diagnosis of breast cancer is associated with a reduced death rate. The Facts: Prostate Cancer & Soy Recent studies indicate a strong link between soy consumption and a reduced risk of prostate cancer (PCa). Epidemiological evidence shows that total soy food intake is significantly associated with a lower risk of developing PCa. While research on individual soy foods and their relationship with PCa risk is limited, tofu has been the most extensively studied. The findings consistently highlight tofu's significant protective association with prostate cancer. This evidence suggests that incorporating tofu and other soy-based foods into one's diet may contribute to a decreased risk of prostate cancer, emphasizing the potential benefits of soy isoflavones in cancer prevention. So, should cancer survivors eat soy or not? The myth that soy consumption increases the risk of breast and prostate cancer is unfounded. On the contrary, incorporating soy into your diet can be beneficial and may lower the risk of both cancers. As with any dietary choice, it is important to consume soy as part of a balanced diet. The latest research supports the safety and potential benefits of soy, providing reassurance to those who enjoy soy-based foods. My journey with cancer and an autoimmune disease taught me how powerful our emotions can be and how they affect our health. In the same month, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease and breast cancer. It felt like my world was falling apart. My heart raced, I couldn't focus, and I was consumed by constant worry. When the heart and brain communicate effectively, you experience calm, reduced anxiety, decreased mental chatter, and a greater sense of presence. The Science Behind HeartMath The HeartMath Institute has conducted extensive research on the benefits of HRV and coherence. Their findings show that achieving coherence improves physical and emotional health. For cancer patients, this can mean better stress management, improved immune function, and a greater ability to cope with treatment and recovery. My Personal Journey with HeartMath Using HeartMath has been transformative in my healing journey. Not only did it help me manage my anxiety, but it also provided a sense of control over my emotions and health. The techniques allowed me to focus on healing rather than being consumed by fear and worry. As a certified HeartMath wellness provider, I now help others navigate their health challenges. Teaching these techniques to fellow cancer patients and individuals with chronic illnesses has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing others benefit from these simple yet powerful tools reaffirms my belief in the power of HeartMath. Practical Applications for Cancer Patients For those dealing with cancer, the stress and anxiety can be overwhelming. HeartMath offers a practical way to manage these emotions and improve overall well-being.     Jerilyn Isaacson, Charleston SC Member of The After Cancer since January 2024 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Stage 3. Terrifying news, right??  I finished twenty-six rounds of chemotherapy, had a double mastectomy, then twenty-eight rounds of radiation. In February of 2024, I was given a clean bill of health – cancer free– so I should have been walking on clouds. But I wasn’t. For the past year someone else had been watching over me, telling me what to do, monitoring blood tests and other test results constantly. But at that moment in time, I realized that I was now on my own to fight this horrible beast and to do whatever I could to keep it from returning. And I was clueless. All I could think was, "I am more scared now than on the day I was diagnosed". About two weeks after this realization, I read a monthly newsletter from a non-profit group called Nothing Pink that had helped me through my chemotherapy and surgery. They had a note in the newsletter about a group called The After Cancer and some upcoming workshops they were doing. Just the name intrigued me because that’s where I was at that moment in time.  I was dealing with The After Cancer. I immediately looked up their website, read everything on it, and signed up for a 6-week program. It turned out to be the greatest blessing for me! I gained so much knowledge, gained confidence that I COULD do this, and met some terrific people and heard some courageous stories. We shared. We cried. We laughed. Now The After Cancer is a regular part of my life. I try to attend workshops, group chats, yoga sessions – anything I can that strikes my need that week or month to help me through my days of now living with cancer. I know I would not be as confident and at peace today if it was not for their care and concern. Love these new friends!

Here a some Practical Tips for Adopting the Mediterranean Diet Start with Small Changes : Gradually incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your meals. Try having a salad with olive oil dressing daily and replace refined grains with whole grains. This should be 50% of your plate. Cook at Home : Preparing meals at home allows you to control the ingredients and ensure they align with Mediterranean diet principles. Experiment with traditional recipes like a Greek salad or Ratatouille . Choose Healthy Fats : Replace butter and margarine with olive oil. Snack on nuts and seeds instead of processed snacks. Eat Seafood Twice a Week : Aim to include fish or seafood in your diet at least twice a week. Grilled salmon, sardines, or shrimp can be delicious and nutritious options. Flavor with Herbs and Spices : Use herbs and spices to enhance the flavor of your dishes without relying on salt. Experiment with different combinations to discover new favorites.   • Osteosarcoma: Risks, Symptoms and History

    A disease with over 1.7 million years The oldest description of a cancer diagnosis comes from Ancient Egypt and dates back to about 1600 BC. It comes from what is called the Edwin Smith Papyrus, which was probably used as a manual of military surgery back then. The importance of this document is endless, it represents the first description of a disease with a rational and scientific approach that we know of.  But this is not the first evidence of cancer. A fossil of a 1.7 million years old human ancestor, found in a cave in South Africa, appeared to have carved into his toe bone the cancer that probably led to his death. We can still come back 240 million years ago. A fossil of a Pappochelys rosinae , a shell-less, extinct ancestor of modern turtles, found in Germany in 2015, shows a pattern that we are very familiar with today: cancer growing from its bones.  What is Osteosarcoma? The diagnosis for both fossils came with a delay: Osteosarcoma. The most common of the bone cancers. This is the best evidence that cancer has been on earth before the first human being. It clearly shows a reality that sometimes is hard to acknowledge: cancer is intrinsic to life. Life is change and cancer is the disease of change.  Symptoms of Osteosarcoma Since July is Bone Cancer Awareness Month let's remember the signs and symptoms, according to the Cleveland Clinic: Bone pain or tenderness. A mass or lump (tumor) that is warm and might be felt through your skin. Swelling and redness at the site of your tumor. Increased pain with lifting (if it affects your arm). Limping (if it affects your leg). Limited movement (if it affects a joint). Unexplained fever. Broken bone (sometimes this happens after a simple movement). Risk factors of Osteosarcoma Even though primary bone cancer is very rare, and it is much more likely that it is something else that is causing these symptoms we must be at least aware. The causes are uncertain. We know that radiation therapy and chemotherapy for other cancers can lead to the later development of bone cancer. Also, some genetic syndromes are tied to higher bone cancer risk, such as bloom syndrome, hereditary retinoblastoma, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, multiple osteochondromas, Rothmund-Thomson syndrome II, tuberous sclerosis, and chordoma werner syndrome.   • Sarcoma Awareness Month - Risks, Symptoms and History

    This date is an important reminder of the disease risk factors and the most common symptoms, so that we are able to recognize it as early as possible. It is also an important month to remind ourselves a little of the history of our fight against cancer. The battle against sarcoma, especially Kaposi's Sarcoma, embodies a truth that runs through all our battles against cancer: in the course of fighting it, we had to defeat our internal enemies first.  What is a Sarcoma and what are known risk factors? It is difficult to speak of sarcoma as a single entity, as the definition includes more than 70 different types of cancer. Sarcoma is the general term for a large group of cancers that arise in the bones or soft tissues (muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and synovium). This year, an estimated 17,100 people in the United States will be diagnosed with sarcoma. Although it is one of the rarest cancers in adults, less than 1% of the total, it is considered one of the deadliest rare cancers. Therefore, it is important to know the risk factors and symptoms because, as with any other cancer, the earlier it is diagnosed, the better the prognosis. Here are some known risk factors that increase the likelihood of the disease: If someone in your family has had sarcoma; You have a disease called Paget's disease; You have a genetic disorder such as neurofibromatosis, Gardner syndrome, retinoblastoma or Li-Fraumeni syndrome; You have been exposed to radiation, perhaps during treatment for a previous cancer; What are the common symptoms of Sarcoma? There are some things you can keep an eye out for in terms of common symptoms. Soft tissue sarcomas are difficult to spot, they can grow anywhere in your body. Most of the time, the first sign is a painless lump. As the lump grows, it may press on nerves or muscles and cause discomfort and/or breathing difficulties. There are no tests that can detect these tumors before they cause symptoms that you notice. Osteosarcoma may show obvious early symptoms, such as on-and-off pain in the affected bone that may worsen at night, stitching that often starts weeks after the pain, and a limp if the sarcoma is in your leg. Treatment is usually surgical, combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy . However, recent research is getting closer and closer to new treatment methods. One of the greatest innovations of recent decades, immunotherapy to fight cancer, could soon be available for sarcomas. The link between HIV and Kaposi’s Sarcoma On July 3, 1981, a New York Times article was headlined, “Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals”. In the early 1980s, the medical community, particularly in New York and Los Angeles, noted a sudden increase in the incidence of a very rare form of sarcoma called Kaposi’s Sarcoma. The rise of several cases of cancer among gay men led to increasing stigmatization, to the point that the disease came to be known as “gay cancer”. No one knew what was causing that sudden increase and the fact that it was contained in that particular population certainly delayed actual research.  One thing that made it possible to overcome the stigma was that cancer at that time was seen as the nation’s number one health problem and funding for research was highly available. The fact that the sarcoma only occurred in one particular community, suggested that it might have an identifiable cause that, if uncovered, could potentially lead to a universal cancer cure. This outcome did not materialize. However, the cancer research, largely funded by the Cancer Research Institute (CRI), paved the way for us to understand what was truly causing the increased incidence: the soaring HIV epidemic. Without the cancer's importance at the time, scientists probably would not have recognized the cause of AIDS so quickly. History books refer to Kaposi’s sarcoma as the disease that unveiled the HIV epidemic, which to this day has killed over 40 million people. This disease showed that we can sometimes be our own worst enemies. Sarcoma is rare, but you can make a difference. Last but not least, because sarcoma is a rare disease, the financial incentives for research and development of new treatments are low. But you can do your bit to change this reality. For example, by donating to institutions like the Sarcoma Foundation of America that support medical research to find a cure for sarcoma.   • Exploring the Potential of Plant-Based Diets for Prostate Cancer Patients

    A new study published in JAMA Network Open , by Vivian N. Liu, MA S, Erin L. Van Blarigan, ScD , Li Zhang, PhD , et al., shows promising results regarding the impact of plant-based diets on the survival of prostate cancer patients . The research discovered that individuals who consumed a considerable amount of plant-based food experienced notably reduced risks of cancer progressing, in comparison with those who consumed fewer plant-based foods. These findings highlight that a diet rich in plant-based foods could significantly benefit men with prostate cancer . What is a Plant-based Diet for Prostate Cancer Patients? A plant-based diet focuses on consuming mainly vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. This dietary approach can range widely in its strictness and inclusion of animal products, creating a spectrum of dietary practices: Vegan Diet : The strictest form of a plant-based diet, vegans avoid all animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs, and even honey. This diet is exclusively comprised of plant-derived foods. Vegetarian Diet : Vegetarians avoid meat, fish, and poultry but typically consume dairy products and eggs. Flexitarian Diet : Also known as semi-vegetarian, this diet is primarily plant-based but occasionally includes small amounts of meat, fish, or poultry. It offers flexibility for those who wish to reduce their meat consumption without completely eliminating it. Pescatarian Diet : Pescatarians follow a plant-based diet that includes fish and seafood. They avoid meat and poultry but consume other animal products like dairy and eggs. How Plant-Based Diets Can Benefit Prostate Cancer Patients? Plant-based diets may improve outcomes for prostate cancer patients due to several factors: Cancer-Fighting Agents: Plants are abundant in compounds that combat inflammation and cellular damage, thereby potentially slowing cancer growth . Weight Control: These diets are generally lower in calories and rich in fiber, which aids in maintaining a healthy weight—a key factor in lowering cancer risk. Fewer Harmful Substances: Reducing the intake of red and processed meats minimizes exposure to carcinogenic substances that develop during cooking and processing. Improved Heart Health : Rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats, plant-based diets can lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Nutritional Considerations before Starting a Plant-Based Diet While plant-based diets offer many benefits, it's important to ensure a balanced intake of essential nutrients: Protein : Sources include legumes, nuts, seeds, tofu, and tempeh. Vitamin B12 : Since B12 is primarily found in animal products, vegans may need fortified foods or supplements.   • The Hidden Dangers of Hair Relaxers: Unveiling a Silent Health Crisis

    A research that spanned over 20 years, and included nearly 70 scientific investigations, led by Professor Tamarra James-Todd has established the link between hair relaxers, mostly used by black women, and reproductive health issues. Why Are Hair Relaxers Dangerous? The research has shown that hair straighteners and similar products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals. These substances are found to be linked to early menstruation, uterine fibroids, preterm birth, infertility, and various cancers, including breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer. Formaldehyde, a common ingredient in these products, is associated with cancer and other long-term harmful health effects. Studies have also found that many toxic ingredients are not listed on the packaging, leading to widespread unawareness of the risks. Why This Particularly Concerns Black Women Black women are disproportionately affected by the dangers of hair relaxers. A study conducted in 2020 found that 89 percent of Black women in the United States have used hair relaxers at least once, often starting in childhood. This extensive use, driven by societal pressures to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards, has led to serious health risks. Many of these health issues are more common in Black women, including an aggressive form of breast cancer with a death rate 28% higher than that of white women. Legal and Legislative Actions In response to these health risks, California became the first state to pass the CROWN Act in 2019, making hair discrimination illegal. Since then, 23 other states, 50 cities, and the House of Representatives have passed similar legislation. In October 2022, following the publication of the Sister Study research, the first lawsuit was filed against companies accused of knowing their products increased cancer risk but not warning consumers. By February 2023, these cases were combined into a class-action lawsuit to speed up the legal process. Moving Forward Professor James-Todd's research is crucial in advocating for stricter regulations and raising awareness about the health risks associated with hair relaxers.   • Majority of Breast Cancer Survivors Can Successfully Achieve Pregnancy - New Study Reveals

    A new study has found that most young women who attempt pregnancy after a breast cancer diagnosis can successfully conceive and give birth. This research, conducted by Sorouri et al, will be presented at the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting. The study analyzed data from the Young Women's Breast Cancer Study, which included women diagnosed with stage 0 to III breast cancer at age 40 or younger from 2006 to 2016. Researchers excluded women who had prior hysterectomies, bilateral oophorectomies, or metastatic disease at diagnosis. 65% of Participants Reported At Least One Child Participants: 1,213 women, with 197 attempting pregnancy post-diagnosis. Demographics: Median age at diagnosis was 32; 74% were non-Hispanic White. Cancer Stages: 41% had stage I, 35% stage II, 10% stage III, and 14% stage 0. Treatment: 76% had hormone receptor-positive disease; 68% received chemotherapy. Pregnancy Attempts: 73% of those who tried to conceive were successful, and 65% reported at least one live birth. Timing: Median time from diagnosis to first pregnancy was 48 months. What Factors Can Influence Pregancy After Breast Cancer? Age: Older age at diagnosis reduced the likelihood of pregnancy and live birth. Financial Comfort: Greater financial comfort increases the likelihood of pregnancy. The Teal Diva 5K, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for ovarian and gynecologic cancer research and support, provided an excellent platform for us to showcase our unique care model based on Integrative Oncology. Connecting with the Community of GYN Cancer Survivors The day was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and an overwhelming sense of community. We had the incredible opportunity to meet many wonderful individuals, each with their own powerful stories of resilience and strength. These interactions were not only heartwarming but also underscored the immense need for comprehensive support for cancer survivors, reinforcing our mission . Engaging with the local community allowed us to better understand and address their unique needs. Introducing The After Cancer Resources to Cancer Survivors in Charlotte Our booth attracted numerous visitors eager to learn about our resources designed to help survivors manage treatment symptoms, adopt healthy behaviors, and reduce the risk of recurrence. The genuine interest and positive feedback we received were truly encouraging. Many of these amazing individuals decided to join our group sessions, where they can find a supportive community and access the personalized care they need. Our presence at the Teal Diva 5K highlighted the importance of local engagement and support.
